Overview of the Coffee Export Industry in Ghana

Although Ghana’s coffee industry is relatively small compared to its cocoa industry, there have been efforts in recent years to expand production and exports.

Below are some key details about Ghana’s coffee industry.

Coffee Production

  • Coffee is grown in the Volta, Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Western, and Brong-Ahafo regions of Ghana.
  • Robusta coffee does well in Ghana, due to its resistance to pests and the country’s tropical climate.

Export Market

  • The primary export destinations for Ghanaian coffee are Burkina Faso, Lebanon, the United States, Benin, Senegal, and Europe (Germany, the UK and the Netherlands). Other export destinations include China, Japan, the UAE, South Africa, and Togo.
  • Ghana is the 128th largest exporter of coffee in the world and coffee is its 395th most exported product.
  • While coffee is not among Ghana’s top exports, it is certainly a potential revenue booster alongside cocoa and cashew nuts.

Flavor Profile

  • The Robusta coffee plant is an indigenous coffee plant in West Africa, whose coffee beans are used in espresso and instant coffee.
  • Ghanaian Robusta coffee has an earthy and bitter flavor that is pleasant and not too overpowering. It also has a smooth texture with a mix of chocolate, nuts, and caramel with hints of jasmine, rose, and citrus.
